The Kentucky Kid is heading home. After another cameo for ITV Racing at Royal Ascot, Steve Cauthen bids farewell after his three-week stroll down memory lane. He does so with treasure chests of revived reminiscences from his 14-year spell in Britain, when his riding style changed the sport forever.

Now 62, Cauthen cannot stop smiling as he recounts the good, bad and downright unprintable stories of his stay here. He has not been back for three decades but time’s passage has not frayed the bonds of friendships.

“It seems like only yesterday,” he reflects at the Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket, where 30 of his closest friends gathered the previous night to raise a glass or three.
