Andre Fabre in the Mishriff fan club after frustrating Victor Ludorum defeat
Nearly a week on from the Prix du Jockey Club, Andre Fabre remains as impressed with the John Gosden-trained winner Mishriff as he was disappointed with the defeat of Victor Ludorum.
Victor Ludorum was clear 2-1 favourite to add a second Classic triumph to his win over a mile in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.
In the circumstances stall one was not the ideal draw for a confirmed hold-up horse and Mickael Barzalona was forced to forfeit quite a bit of ground in circling the field, after Victor Ludorum failed to break on terms with the horses immediately to his outer.
Victor Ludorum worked his way into a threatening position in the straight but was unable to go with Mishriff inside the final furlong, finishing two lengths back in third.
Fabre was quick to emphasise that Mishriff, whose sire Make Believe he trained for owner-breeder Prince Faisal, was a worthy winner.
"First of all I think Mishriff won really well," said Fabre. "Victor Ludorum didn't have an ideal race, that's for sure, but I can't guarantee he would have beaten the winner. The draw didn't help and then he didn't help himself by breaking too lazily. I was really frustrated.
"But the winner won really well. He was maybe not very fancied but he's a good horse. When you think back to his race in Saudi Arabia, that was impressive. He got left and made up an incredible amount of ground.
"He's good looking, well bred and by a young stallion who looks promising. He could be a really good horse."
Given the way the race played out Fabre is not inclined to blame any lack of stamina on Victor Ludorum's finishing position at Chantilly.
But having proved his effectiveness over a mile, options will be left open as to his next race while other leading Godolphin three-year-olds such as stablemate Earthlight and the Charlie Appleby-trained Pinatubo have their next start on Sunday.
Fabre said: "Victor Ludorum has two options. He either goes for the mile and a quarter Prix Guillaume d'Ornano [August 15] or the Prix Jacques le Marois [August 16]. The coming days will help us decide, with results this Sunday and at Goodwood. He can run over a mile or a mile and a quarter."
Fabre dropped the late Manduro back in trip to win the Marois after taking the Prince of Wales's Stakes in 2007.
Should Victor Ludorum stay at a mile and a quarter in the Group 2 Guillaume d'Ornano, he would not shoulder a Group 1 penalty.
