Everything you need for Newmarket and beyond

If tomorrow is Super Saturday, what does that make today? Plenty of Saturdays through the year will feature multiple Group-race cards, but how often on a Friday do we get to enjoy a Group 1? Or one of the most celebrated juvenile fillies' races of the year? Or a second card headed by a Group race?

Then there's the small matter of the Grand Prix de Paris at Saint-Cloud this evening.

We're glad you agree. Freaky Friday it is.

For the purists, Winter would have turned up in the Falmouth Stakes. Punters who like a challenge will be happier she has stayed at home. When Winter runs she dominates the betting so we should be thankful to see a Group 1 that is 5-2 the field.

Do not spend all your time on the Group races, though. At Newmarket there is the Silver Bunbury Cup, perhaps the most competitive handicap run so far this year.

Throw in all the other meetings in Britain and Ireland and there just aren't enough punting hours in the day. All this and there's still Super Saturday to come.

What's on today

Lots and lots of racing. But there could be Arc implications at Saint-Cloud and there might be a new favourite for the race after the Grand Prix de Paris. It's a renewal without a standout performer, but at this stage much the same could be said of the Arc.

On the subject of tonight, few evening cards will have been given as much advance attention as Musselburgh's. This is the card that so nearly never was and it promises to be quite a show.

What to back

Our experts from around Britain and Ireland have their best bets of the day.

The big meeting at Newmarket has brought out our heaviest tipping artillery. Pricewise has a headline tip in the Duchess Of Cambridge and Gerald Delamere puts up a selection in the Falmouth. (Members' Club)

What to read

Winter improved her standing among the female milers without running this week, but for regrettable reasons. Minding's retirement, announced on Thurday, has led to slew of tributes, including from her trainer who issued some high praise.

You may have missed it last night, but in-form apprentice Kieran Shoemark lost his claim with a stunning treble at Epsom that took him to 96 winners. He could hardly enter the ranks of fully-fledged jockeys in better nick.

What to watch

Dave Orton ruminates on the second day of the July meeting in Orton's Opinions.

Look out also for our Ten Second Tips, which today are brought to you directly from the track by David Baxter.

The best of Racing Post Sport

It's a day for the ladies on four legs, but on two legs and in the saddle the men are in charge.

It is men's semi-final day at Wimbledon and Adrian Humphries has reached a conclusion you might not expect. In the Tour De France, Nick Pulford sees the hilly stage 13 going to a rider who is due a bit of luck.

Final thought

It cannot be often that we are left wondering what might have been after a winner of seven Group 1 races retires. Adaptable as she was classy, a healthy Minding might well have threatened Goldikova's Group 1 total, thought by some to be just about untouchable in Europe.
