Emerging owner Matsushima buys into O'Brien ace Japan with Arc the main target

Emerging ownership force Masaaki Matsushima has bought a half-share in last year's Juddmonte International winner and Arc fourth Japan.

The purchase solidifies Matsushima's relationship with Coolmore, having acquired an interest in Broome last season.

"Mr Matsushima saw Japan at Longchamp on Arc day last October and was very impressed by the horse," said racing manager Yasufumi Sawada. "He loved the horse and believes he is not only very talented but very courageous, and is one of the best in the world.

"We would like to thank the entire Coolmore team as well as Aidan O'Brien, for whom we have enormous respect as a horseman."

No firm decisions have been made as to Japan's programme for the year but O'Brien has mooted the Coronation Cup as a possible starting point.

"One thing is for sure, the main objective will be the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe again," added Sawada.

Matsushima is a close friend of legendary Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, who could become a more regular visitor to Europe to ride his horses in the biggest races.

Among Matsushima's other prospects are Group 3 winner Savarin, who is back in training with Andre Fabre after a break following her defeat in the Prix Marcel Boussac, and Helter Skelter, who is being aimed at the Poule d'Essai des Poulains by Jean-Claude Rouget.

Amarena has not been seen since last year's Prix de Diane but has recovered from a leg problem and is being readied for her comeback by Pascal Bary.
