What did we learn this weekend to point us towards Newmarket and Epsom?

The 2022 Flat season is picking up pace and it's full steam ahead to the first of the Classics – the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket – on April 30 and May 1 respectively.

Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our new series running every morning, has you covered.

Here's a recap of Sunday's action and how it has impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note today.

Racing round-up: Curragh and Longchamp

While the main candidates are yet to appear, some of the dark horses put their names in the ring for the Classics on Sunday at both the Curragh and Longchamp.

The highly talked about Waterville made his debut at the Curragh in the 1m2f maiden but was unable to strike at the first attempt and enhance his Cazoo Derby claims.

The son of Camelot finished third behind Glory Daze, which prompted Aidan O'Brien to rule out a tilt at the Epsom Classic in June.

The Prix la Force was one of the leading races on Longchamp's card on Sunday and Mister Saint Paul emerged as a Classic contender with a narrow success in the Group 3.

The three-year-old was a shock winner by a short-head under Theo Batchelot, but it could be the Prix du Jockey Club he is aimed at rather than a trip to Britain.

Results, replays and analysis

Market movers:

Cazoo Derby

Waterville 25-1 (from 16-1)

What they said:

Aidan O'Brien, speaking about Waterville on Racing TV
We're delighted with the run, he ran a lovely race. Ryan said it was a slow enough pace and he felt he ran home very well. He's a horse with loads of class to come and the plan was if he won today we'd look at a Derby trial. Now we won't and we'll go back for a maiden and look at Ascot. He's still a lovely horse, but a bit of a baby.

All eyes on . . . Craven declarations

While there may not be many Classic clues on the track on Monday, it is off the track where it could be of most importance with the final field for Wednesday's bet365 Craven Stakes set to be confirmed.

Last year's star juvenile Native Trail is expected to take his place in the Group 3 race as he puts his 2,000 Guineas credentials on the line and could come up against fellow unbeaten performers Star Of India and Claymore.

Also on the card, Goldolphin may declare Derby dark horse Ruling Dynasty in the Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes.

The son of Night Of Thunder is closely related to dual Group 1 winner Old Persian and could make his debut in the mile contest, and a classy performance could see his 50-1 odds for the Derby tumble.
