Four horses to keep an eye on during this evening's racing
Punters can enjoy three meetings this evening with racing at Beverley, Ballinrobe and Windsor. The action concludes at 8.55, so if you're keen to avoid the Love Island final, take your pick of Stateside on At The Races or The Verdict on Racing UK . . .
Black Prince5.55 Beverley
John Egan and Anthony Honeyball teamed up for victory with the ultra-game Jukebox Jive at Newbury on Friday and combine again here with the trainer’s other Flat horse, Black Prince.
The three-year-old caught the eye with a staying-on third over 1m4f at Salisbury last month, suggesting this step up to 2m would help, even though on pedigree it is not certain to suit him.
In a weak contest, Black Prince should take plenty of beating with Honeyball having enjoyed three wins from eight runs on the Flat this year.
Maureb/Thatcherite6.55 Beverley
There would be no more poignant winner than either Maureb or Thatcherite, trained by Tony Coyle, in the Jaimie Kerr Memorial Handicap, run in memory of the trainer’s former partner, who died two years ago aged 38.
Maureb finished a length third behind Ziggy Lee in the inaugural running of the renamed race last year and returns off a 6lb lower mark.
The daughter of Excellent Art made all in a fillies’ handicap at Carlisle most recently, while Thatcherite finished with a flourish when fifth at the track last time. Victory for either sprinter is likely to spark emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure.
Shifting Star8.45 Windsor
John Bridger’s likeable veteran makes his 23rd start at the track in the concluding 1m event, won four years ago by subsequent Prix du Cadran scorer Quest For More on his handicap debut off a mark of 68.
The 12-year-old, a four-time winner at Windsor, finished fifth in the race last year and races off a 3lb lower mark this evening.
Although Bollihope and Dragons Voice have raced prominently recently, Shifting Star is the only out-and-out front-runner in the field and William Carson may well be able to dictate proceedings at a track that favours those who race close to the pace.
