Confirmed runners and riders for Morgiana Hurdle as Mullins seeks ten in a row
Saint Roi will attempt to provide champion trainer Willie Mullins with a tenth successive victory in the Grade 1 Unibet Morgiana Hurdle on Sunday after featuring among five declarations for the 2m contest at Punchestown.
Owned by JP McManus, who splashed out £570,000 on Jonbon, a brother to Mullins’s brilliant Douvan, on Thursday, Saint Roi was successful in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March and returned to the track with a smooth victory at Tipperary last month.
Saint Roi, who will be bidding to follow in the hoofprints of greats such as Hurricane Fly, Nichols Canyon and Faugheen by winning the Morgiana, is the 4-7 favourite with the sponsors to take the prize.
The Morgiana field is completed by 5-2 second favourite Abacadabras, Coeur Sublime, who will be making his debut for trainer Gearoid O'Loughlin, Jason The Militant and the evergreen Supasundae.
On what is set to be a quality day on either side of the Irish Sea, Defi Du Seuil heads a six-strong field for the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at Cheltenham.
Rouge Vif, an impressive winner at Cheltenham last month, Riders Onthe Storm, Forest Bihan, Arkle winner Put The Kettle On and Duc Des Genievres complete the field.
In the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle, the prolific Main Fact is a notable absentee from the final field of 18. Alan King, who has saddled two of the last three winners, saddles last year's victor Harambe and Edwardstone.
Edwardstone and Proschema head Unibet's market at 11-2 for the Greatwood, which forms part of the Road to Cheltenham programme up to the Unibet Champion Hurdle in March.
Ed Nicholson, head of racing sponsorship and communication at Unibet's parent company Kindred Group, said: “The Unibet Greatwood Hurdle is the third race in the Unibet Road to Cheltenham series of six races.
"It has always thrown up quality two-mile hurdlers since its inception in 1987. That year Celtic Shot won before taking the Champion Hurdle and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if the winner of this year’s renewal became a Unibet Champion Hurdle contender.”
