Can today's challenger put the punters ahead against Graeme Rodway?

Introducing Punter v The Pro, our new tipping competition in which Racing Post readers go head-to-head with top tipster Graeme Rodway.

The format is simple: the punter and the pro both give six selections in ITV races decided by us and whoever comes out on top based on level-stakes profit to SP is the winner. The prize? Sheer pride!

Yesterday's result: Not one to be particularly proud of but Ed Chamberlin kicked off the ITV Racing Christmas Festival with a narrow victory for the punters.

No winners were found but with Ed's pick Oscar Thyne being a non-runner at Wetherby, he finished the day with a -5.0 level stakes-profit to Graeme's -6.0, after four of the pro's six picks finished second.

The score so far: Punters 2-2 The Pro

The punter . . .

Name Jordan Arksey

Occupation Content editor

Flat or jumps? Jumps

Favourite horse It's difficult to single out just one but I absolutely adored Vautour

Favourite course Beverley on the Flat and Market Rasen over jumps

Biggest win I'm not entirely sure of my biggest ever but I landed a nice touch at Royal Ascot this year. I was convinced William Haggas had laid out Candleford for the Duke of Edinburgh and he didn't let me down – I managed to get on at 11-1 and 10-1 earlier in the week.

Unluckiest loser I had a decent ante-post bet on Neon Wolf to win the Neptune Novices' Hurdle [now the Ballymore] at the Cheltenham Festival in 2017. He was unbeaten coming into the race and looked like extending his winning sequence to five only to land awkwardly after the last flight and go down by a head to Willoughby Court.

. . . and the pro

Graeme Rodway is one of the longest-serving members of the Racing Post's tipping and analysis team.

A two-time top-three finisher in the Flat version of the national naps competition under the pseudonym 'The Edge', G-Rod has a proven record of tipping success over a period of more than ten years and now specialises in hurdles races over jumps and staying races on the Flat.

The picks

1.05 Chepstow

Jordan:Fugitif

Took a step back in the right direction when only finding one too good on his seasonal reappearance over two miles at Cheltenham’s November meeting. Winner has gone in again since and Fugitif is well worth another try at this trip.

Graeme:Golden Whisky

Now 2lb lower than when winning this race comfortably last year and the more rain the better.

1.55 Kempton

Jordan:Get A Tonic

Lost little in defeat when runner-up in a valuable staying handicap at Haydock when last seen. Drops back in grade for Tuesday’s assignment and is difficult to oppose despite giving plenty of weight away to each of her six rivals.

Graeme:Coquelicot

Progressive front-runner who recorded a career-best when winning at Sandown last time and can take another step forward.

2.10 Chepstow

Jordan:Kateson

Finished second in this contest 12 months ago but has subsequently tumbled in the weights. Needs to bounce back in a big way but often saves some of his better efforts for this particular venue and has course figures of 12126.

Graeme:Bells Of Peterboro

Runs this track well and could be dangerous now returned to hurdles off just 3lb higher than when winning this race last year.

2.30 Kempton

Jordan:Edwardstone

Emphatic winner of the Tingle Creek earlier this month. This high-class Grade 1 performer should have little difficulty here.

Graeme:Edwardstone

Improved form when winning the Tingle Creek at Sandown and should be too good for these rivals.

2.50 Chepstow

Jordan:The Big Breakaway

Talented chaser on his day and he warmed up for Tuesday’s assignment with a strong staying performance behind an improving type at Haydock over 3m1½f last month.

Graeme:Ask Me Early

Has had this race as the target all season and shaped up nicely for the race when third at Bangor on his reappearance.

3.09 Kempton

Jordan:Five Star Getaway

Landed last year’s contest from this exact mark and he shaped better than the bare result when finishing fifth in the Becher Chase at Aintree last month.

Graeme:Your Darling

Won well over 2m5f at Ascot last time and should be capable of finding further improvement now he is upped to 3m at this track.
