Buick offered chance for Classic glory on Military March in Derby

William Buick has been handed a live chance to land the Investec Derby for the second time in three years after being offered the ride on the fancied Military March in next month's Epsom Classic.

Generally 11-2 third favourite for the Derby, Military March ran a very promising trial for Epsom when finishing a close fourth to Kameko in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, when he was ridden by Hector Crouch.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor, who last won the Derby with Lammtarra in 1995, has now turned to the more experienced Buick, who rode Masar to victory in 2018, giving Godolphin a coveted first success in the race in their blue silks.

Recently, Buick has been recalled to ride out for Bin Suroor on the Newmarket gallops, and takes his first rides for the trainer since 2016 at Royal Ascot this week.

After watching Military March breeze on Warren Hill on Tuesday morning, Bin Suroor said: "Military March has come out of the Guineas in good shape and we are hoping William Buick can ride him in the Derby.

"William knows his way around Epsom and we go there with our best chance for many years with this horse. He ran well at Newmarket but he looked then as if he needed further and we think the mile and a half will suit him well."

Prior to Crouch taking over in the 2,000 Guineas, Military March was partnered by Pat Cosgrave on his debut, with Oisin Murphy then in the saddle for the colt's second juvenile start when winning the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket.
