David Elsworth was a champion who became the best dual-purpose British trainer of his generation, a man for all seasons equally adept with staying chasers and precocious two-year-olds.
In 1990 alone his masterpiece, Desert Orchid, reached his peak as the greatest chaser of that era and he also had the champion three-year-old filly, In The Groove, as well as repeat Queen Mother Champion Chase victor Barnbrook Again and Grade 1-winning hurdler Floyd.
During Desert Orchid's career his stablemates Dead Certain and Seattle Rhyme were both Group 1-winning two-year-olds. No other British-based trainer has consistently had winners at the top level in both spheres simultaneously.
