Pro-racing petition hits 10,000 trigger

THERE was a shot in the arm for under-threat Welsh track Valley on Saturday with news that the pro-racing petition challenging the greyhound racing ban in Wales has officially passed the 10,000-signature threshold.

This means it is now eligible to be considered for a debate in the Senedd (Welsh Parliament).

The figure was still rising at 10,130 signatures on Saturday afternoon. The petition had been instigated to challenge the decision of the Welsh government in early 2025 to introduce a phased ban on greyhound racing, making Wales the first nation in the UK to do so.

A previous setback had seen the figures reduced as official government and parliamentary petition systems automatically discount votes cast by overseas residents.

Supporters of the petition, which has been pushed hard on social media and at UK greyhound tracks, have argued that the legislation was pushed through too quickly without proper consideration and that the ban relies on outdated data and threatens both the livelihoods of those in the industry and the greyhound breed itself.

The petitions committee considers all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures for a debate.

Earlier in the year the High Court in Wales dismissed a judicial review challenge brought by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain against the Welsh government’s decision to introduce the Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Wales) Bill.
