King Memphis reigns at Towcester

KING MEMPHIS reigned supreme in the BGBF British Bred semi-finals at Towcester yesterday.

Liz McNair’s multiple big-race champion followed up his smart heat win with a game and gutsy success over the 500m trip in the third and final qualifier.

Ante-post favourite Romeo Steel missed the break before roaring up the inside to recover and barge his way to the front.

But the 2024 Derby finalist gave chase and powered past the leader late on to score by just under a length from Romeo Ability in 29.32sec.

Kevin Hutton’s Venetian Will came through a muddling opening semi, taking up the running at a messy third bend and holding Richie Taberner’s Aero Boris by a short head in 29.71sec.

Defending champion and odds-on favourite Keefill Rocky crashed out of the second qualifier, which was another contest with plenty of crowding.

Heather Dimmock’s Spiridon Zelus scored in 29.74sec, with Hutton’s Coppice Lottie just under a length in arrears at the line and also qualifying for Sunday’s £10,000 final.

The draw will take place this morning at the GBGB offices.
