Dunstall Park looking to the future

DUNSTALL PARK is now approaching a year in operation as a greyhound track and the Wolverhampton circuit hopes to see out 2026 in style with a busy period ahead.

The Jak Knappe-trained Sovereign Poppy won the first race at the sport’s newest track on September 8 last year and general manager Chris Black says he is enjoying the journey so far.

“It was a real honour to oversee that first race meeting here almost a year ago,” he said. “Jak had worked at many kennels in the past; he had a connection with Perry Barr and it was great to see that after we made the transition across.

“Since then my highlights have been Butlers Lane winning the PGR Oaks, which was our first Category One competition, but obviously staging the dual fixture in March, which featured both versions of the Lady Wulfruna Stakes [equine and canine], was brilliant. We saw both sports come together; it was seamless and well received by all.”

With the PGR St Leger and Arc Birmingham Cup both kicking off this weekend, Black is looking forward to a busy finish to the year.

He said: “The St Leger will be the first here since it moved to Nottingham while we made the transition from Perry Barr, and we have the second running of the Oaks at Dunstall, both of which should attract top-quality fields.

“Then we’re looking on to Christmas when we can pack this place out and make it a real buzz over the festive period.

“Greyhound racing can be a fun, cheap night out. Action-packed and exhilarating from the moment you come through the doors.”
