Next Prime Minster odds and politics betting: New PM Truss facing uphill battle

Keir Starmer cut to 8-11 to be next PM after Liz Truss is named Tory leader

Liz Truss has won the race to take over as Prime Minister after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest, but she may face a trickier battle when trying to win over the country at the next general election.

The head-to-head between Truss and Sunak was fairly one-sided with 57 per cent of the votes cast going to the former Foreign Secretary.

However, the new Prime Minister has a host of serious problems to address, including the looming crisis over household energy bills.

Over the course of the campaign Truss signalled her intention to lend support in the form of tax cuts, but there has been speculation that she could go further by considering a freeze on energy bills.

Truss's longer-term aim will be to see off Sir Keir Starmer in the next nationwide vote.

The next general election is scheduled to take place in 2024 but an earlier poll is not inconceivable with odds of 12-1 that it takes place this year and 9-2 for it to transpire in 2023.

When the moment arrives Labour are favourites to return to power.

Starmer is 8-11 with Hills to be the Prime Minister after the next general election with Truss a 5-4 shot.

However, it remains a tight battle with Labour and the Conservatives 10-11 joint-favourites to win the most seats.
