A week ago, when Wigan’s Ben Flower was sent off with Warring­ton leading 28-14, the Wolves looked nailed-on certainties to lift the League Leader’s Shield.

Twenty mystifying minutes later, Tony Smith’s team had capitulated against 12 men to leave them odds-on to finish third and miss out on a home tie in the playoff semi-finals.

Warrington will still finish top if they avoid defeat at Hull tonight but the Black & Whites will take pole position if they prevail.
