Match preview

New Warrington Wolves coach Daryl Powell made a winning start to the 2022 Betfred Super League season at his former club Leeds Rhinos on Saturday and Powell renews acquaintances with another of his old employers, Castleford, in round two.

Powell transformed the Tigers from also-rans to trophy contenders during an eight-season spell at The Jungle before opting to leave West Yorkshire for Warrington in the off-season.

Cas made the 2017 Super League Grand Final and 2014 Challenge Cup final under Powell's leadership and both will be on his radar in his first season at the Halliwell Jones.

The Wire, famously Super League's perennial bridesmaids, left it late to beat Leeds, who despite being reduced to 12 men in the 16th minute bossed large parts of the game, and Powell will know his new side will have to improve if they are to break their title duck in 2022.

However, two points are all that matters in round one and it is two more than Castleford managed as they were beaten 26-16 by Salford in Lee Radford's first game as Tigers head coach.

The last eight league and cup clashes between the pair have been shared at four wins apiece and a ten-point handicap may be a little on the steep side on Thursday night.

The last three meetings have resulted in victories by 16 points for Warrington, 15 for Cas and 24 for the Wolves, but the five games before that were all settled by fewer than ten points and there is enough firepower and creativity within Castleford's ranks for them to keep pace with Warrington.
