Match preview

Prior to the 2020 Betfred Super League season, Toronto Wolfpack had lost only four regular-season games in their history – they have already lost half that amount in the opening two weeks of the new season.

And a third successive defeat is only 1-6 with the layers as the Wolfpack head to the DW Stadium to face Wigan on Thursday.

Life at rugby league’s top table was always going to be a step up in quality and intensity for the Wolfpack, although there were signs in the second half of last weekend’s defeat at Salford that they were beginning to get up to speed with life in Super League.

However, a trip to the Warriors, who were beaten at Castleford last time out, rates a significant test of their credentials and one made even harder by the fact that coach Brian McDermott has been able to name only 19 men in his squad, rather than 21.

Headline signing Sonny Bill Williams joins an increasing list of absentees as he has returned to New Zealand for the birth of his child.

Wigan will be without internationals Oliver Gildart, George Burgess and Ben Flower but the remaining players at Adrian Lam’s disposal should still have enough quality to return to winning ways.

The Warriors have won 11 of their last 12 since the end of April 2019 and opened their home account with a hard-fought 16-10 win over Warrington on the opening night.

Bookmakers have tasked Wigan with covering a 16-point handicap which should be well within their compass.

Bevan French has been a revelation since arriving at the DW midway through last term with the Aussie crossing for seven tries in ten appearances for the Cherry & Whites. He could be a touch of each-way value to dot down first against the Wolfpack.
