Match preview

It was a case of new coach, same old St Helens as the Betfred Super League champions ran riot on opening night in their Grand Final rematch against Salford.

Saints ran in eight tries in a dominant display but things should be much tighter as they travel to Lancashire rivals Warrington on Thursday.

Wire were the side to deny Saints from becoming treble winners in 2019, defeating the Super League champions in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

However, the Wolves were firmly put in their place by Saints in three league meetings last term, twice on home soil, and a four-point handicap may not be enough to stop St Helens at the Halliwell Jones.

Warrington were strong in defeat at Wigan despite playing with 12 men for almost an hour after captain Chris Hill's dismissal. And it wasn't until Mike Cooper was sent to the sin bin, leaving the Wolves with a two-man deficit, that Wigan were able to breach their defence.

On that evidence they will certainly be in the mix for major honours again this season but champions Saints looked ominous against Salford and the continuity derived from sticking with their title-winning squad is especially beneficial at the start of the season when other clubs are still developing their key combinations.
