Match preview

Rugby League World Cup second-favourites New Zealand should make a flying start to the their campaign when they take on Lebanon at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday night.

The Kiwis are just 7-2 to win the tournament and Michael Maguire has named a strong squad for this winter's event in England.

NRL stars Dylan Brown, Jahrome Hughes, Joey Manu and Brandon Smith are all set to lead through the middle of the park, and after New Zealand beat Leeds Rhinos 74-0 in their final warm-up match, they should make light work of Lebanon, who are playing in only their third World Cup.

Although Lebanon do have some creativity in the halves, New Zealand's young and dynamic squad should cruise to victory.

Earlier in the day, Scotland face Italy in the second match of Group B at Kingston Park. Scotland coach Nathan Graham has included five Australia-based players in his squad, and their Betfred Super League experience should eventually get them over the line in a close encounter.

Jamaica's battle with Ireland takes place at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, and like New Zealand's clash with Lebanon, it should be a mismatch from the first whistle.

Richie Myler, James Bentley and Luke Keary will all wear Ireland's shirt this winter and they should put up a hefty points total as they bid to get off to a winning start under coach Ged Corcoran.
