Match previews

Warrington Wolves have started the Betfred Super League season with a whimper and a side who had lofty ambitions at the beginning of the campaign find themselves down in eighth spot.

Huddersfield Giants, on the other hand, would have been happy just to make the playoffs after a couple of lean years but they have taken great strides in 2022 and find themselves handily-placed in fourth.

An away win is the preference here despite the fact the Giants have won just five of their previous 15 away fixtures in the league.

And that is based purely on how impressive Ian Watson's men have been this season.

A comfortable opening schedule saw the Giants take on four of the lesser lights in their opening six fixtures and they made it count.

Huddersfield are the third-highest point-scorers in the division with 218 and they have seen off Catalans, Castleford and Hull KR with some impressive performances.

St Helens were run close last time out, while narrow defeats to Hull FC and Wigan and a draw with Leeds suggest the Giants should continue to be taken seriously.

Warrington fell to a last-gasp defeat at Hull FC on Monday and although they have won seven of their last eight meetings with Huddersfield, this looks a good time to be taking them on.

Wakefield Trinity are also finding wins hard to come by and their position is unlikely to improve at Hull KR.

Trinity have won four of their last five meetings with the Robins but have managed just three wins from their opening nine fixtures this season.

Rovers are fresh from an Easter double in which they won the Hull derby and came from behind to trounce Toulouse, however, the players were said to be shocked this week by the news that head coach Tony Smith would leave his role at the end of the season.

Smith has done an excellent job in east Hull and his side are on the up once more this season and the Robins should be too strong for Trinity at Craven Park, where they have won three of their last four matches.

KR are a side likely to want to send Smith out on a high and that could spur them on in the remaining months. Wakey may be the first side to feel that emotion.
