John Bateman can say his goodbyes to Wigan Warriors in style
Forwards should shine at Old Trafford
Wigan v Warrington
Sky Sports Arena & Main Event, 5pm Saturday
Special bets
Sam Tomkins missed Wigan’s 2016 Grand Final victory over Warrington but bookmakers believe the full-back will make up for lost time - he’s 7-1 favourite to win the Harry Sunderland Trophy for man of the match.
In normal circumstances, full-backs are likely to catch the eye but if the forecast Manchester monsoon arrives then this could be a night for the forwards to take centre stage.
Wigan second-rower Liam Farrell took the individual honours in 2016 and is 40-1 to repeat the feat but a far more likely recipient is Australia-bound John Bateman.
Many believe the former Bradford star was unlucky not to be named Man of Steel and a big game would give the voting media a chance to make amends.
Joe Greenwood has been outstanding for Wigan since arriving from the Gold Coast Titans in mid-season. He merits support at 25-1 and it may be worth speculating at huge prices on Wolves stalwart Ben Westwood at 50-1 and Wigan prop Ben Flower at twice that price.
Tries may be at a premium and there will be worse prices than the 150-1 that this final does not see one at all.
Nevertheless, it may be worth taking a chance that a big-priced player crosses the whitewash.
Wigan’s Ryan Sutton has notched in six of his 22 appearances and can be backed at 12-1, while Warrington’s Ben Murdoch-Masila has six tries in 21 games and bagged 14 in 24 for Salford last season. He’s 17-2 to grab a four pointer.
