Gold Coast Titans endured a miserable 2019, picking up the NRL wooden spoon after just four wins in the regular season.

The Titans sent out an SOS to St Helens' Super League-winning coach Justin Holbrook in a bid to revive their fortunes but defeat in round one was an all too familiar story.

That loss at the hands of the Raiders was their 12th in succession in the NRL and it's hard to see what Holbrook can do to arrest their slide.

Despite being back on home soil for the first time this season, Gold Coast are 9-4 outsiders to beat the Parramatta Eels - a side who thumped them 36-12 on their own patch last August - on Sunday morning.

The Eels have room for improvement themselves having narrowly seen off Sydney rivals Canterbury 8-2 in their opening contest, displaying the sort of defensive grit Holbrook can only dream of his Titans side showing.

Their attack was lacking its usual precision against the Bulldogs but an extra week of preparation will help to iron out those combinations and when it does click into gear, the Eels showed last year they can be extremely potent.

Only the top two scored more points in the regular season than the visitors and no player crossed for more tries than the Eels' Fijian flyer Maika Savo, who dotted down 22 times in 26 outings in what was remarkably his first season in the NRL.

With the hosts' confidence looking like it is still at rock-bottom, an electric Eels backline could make hay.
