Match previews

Hull KR were the talk of the Betfred Super League last season as their swashbuckling performances carried them to an unlikely sixth-place finish and just 80 minutes away from a stunning Grand Final appearance.

The Robins, who are more used to fighting against relegation, threw caution to the wind in 2021 and their entertaining style produced some memorable performances.

The standout was a 19-0 drubbing of big-spending Warrington Wolves on their own patch in the playoffs which set up their semi-final showdown with Catalans Dragons.

The Dragons were too strong on that occasion but it showed that Rovers can mix it with the big boys and past performances against Wigan have also highlighted their abilities.

KR have won each of their three meetings with the Warriors, who had a miserable 2021 by their standards.

Beaten finalists in 2020, Wigan had high hopes of glory but their inability to score points cost them a shot at glory and Adrian Lam paid the price by losing his job.

Rookie coach Matt Peet has been brought in to breathe some life into a star-studded squad who were the second-lowest point-scorers in the competition ahead of only relegated Leigh.

Peet has a lot to prove but so do his squad and the pressure will be on the likes of John Bateman, Jai Field and Cade Cust to hit the ground running. But that will be easier said than done at a venue where the Warriors have lost on their last two visits.

Craven Park will be rocking on opening night and the home side can once again make a mockery of their underdog tag.

Rising star Mikey Lewis looks set to play a key part - the livewire half-back has bagged ten tries in 22 appearances for Hull KR and his explosive running could cause plenty of problems for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Castleford Tigers are expected to show their claws against Salford Red Devils at the Jungle.

Cas just missed out on the playoffs last season and should start life under new coach Lee Radford with a win having spent big in the off-season.

Jake Mamo was one of those brought in and the flying winger, who bagged 16 tries for Warrington last season, can quickly open his account against a Salford side who won just seven of their 22 matches last season.
