Match previews

Salford Red Devils opened their account for the new Betfred Super League season at the fourth time of asking last week but having taken care of the Leigh Centurions they face a different beast entirely in Castleford Tigers on Friday.

It's been a baptism of fire for new Red Devils' head coach Richard Marshall, who has seen his side ship 114 points in the opening four rounds.

Hammerings at the hands of Catalans Dragons, Hull FC and St Helens meant last week's showdown with Leigh was an almost must-win contest even at this early stage of the season. But having done the business against their fellow strugglers, they face another stiff test from the Tigers.

Cas continue to impress despite losing to Wigan last time out but that 22-12 reverse was preceded by victories over Leigh, Leeds and Warrington in a fine start to the campaign for Daryl Powell's men.

The Tigers have shown their claws after a miserable 2020 and they should be able to take care of a Salford side struggling in defence.

It was 37-30 to Castleford when these two last met but a more one-sided contest looks likely this time around and the men from the Jungle are expected to cover a six-point line on the handicap.

In Friday's 6pm fixtures, St Helens should have no problems seeing off basement boys Leigh but odds of 1-20 about the champions clearly aren't much of a betting proposition.

There may be some juice in the other 6pm contest, however, where Catalans Dragons head to Wakefield.

The Dragons have won three of their opening four matches and can bounce back from defeat to Warrington Wolves last time out.

The French raiders have won their last six meetings with Trinity, and having posted totals of 26, 40, 36, 58, 44 and 25 in those fixtures, a six-point handicap looks well within reach on Friday night.
