Rain delays look set to be a major feature of the Greenbrier Classic but that didn't stop the field posting some low first-round scores.

Players Championship hero Webb Simpson was in the spotlight again with a scorching opening round of 61, just one shot ahead of Whee Kim, with Chilean starlet Joaquin Niemann third after a 63.

Simpson was slashed to 5-2 favourite having been 18-1 at the start and Niemann is 9-1 from 28-1. Bookmakers are less convinced about Kim's prospects of staying among the leaders as the pre-tournament 250-1 shot is still available at 25-1. His two career wins were both on the Korean tour.

Bubba Watson is out to 33-1 from 16-1 after an opening round of 68 but he beat both his playing partners on day one comfortably and is fancied to follow up.

The ante-post second favourite ruined his round with a double-bogey five at the short eighth hole, but was sound otherwise, recording five birdies and only one other bogey.

He looks a solid favourite in his second-round threeball scheduled for 5.50pm UK and Ireland time that is now likely to go off later.

Rival Ted Potter Jnr will be struggling to make the cut after making five bogeys in a first-round 73, while Patton Kizzire is two behind Watson after an opening 70.
