Patrick Reed looks set to become the Hamburg hero

Bryson DeChambeau and Richard McEvoy, 14-1 and 125-1 respectively ante-post, are co-leaders of the European Open with 18 holes to play, the American and the Englishman battling to the top of the board on a stop-start Saturday in Hamburg.

DeChambeau, a two-time US Tour champion who won the Memorial in fine style in June, birdied the 18th hole for the third consecutive day to finish 12 under par. His playing partner McEvoy, a 39-year-old European Tour maiden, closed with seven pars to match that total.

Masters champion Patrick Reed is tied for third spot, a shot behind, alongside Austrian youngster Matthias Schwab.

Final-round advice
Bryson DeChambeau played abysmally in the John Deere Classic on his title defence the week prior to the Open, withdrawing with a shoulder injury when three over par, then he finished tied 51st at Carnoustie, so it has been a surprise to see him perform so well in Hamburg.

That said, the methodical American raider has got progressively worse as the week has worn on, carding rounds of 66, 68 and 70, and the 15-8 favourite is an unattractive proposition with 18 holes to play.

Richard McEvoy has won three times on the Challenge Tour, including last week in France, but the European Tour grade has always proved too tough. The journeyman seems likely to be outclassed on this leaderboard.

Matthias Schwab is a maiden who may not be ready for a Sunday battle with two US Tour stars, while Paul Casey threw away a golden winning chance in the Travelers Championship a month ago before a poor Open effort.

Scott Hend, Romain Wattel, Renato Paratore and Sam Horsfield all have the potential to close with a round in the low-60s and threaten – a rain-softened course in perfect weather awaits and scoring should be extremely good – but all four have probably given too much of a start to the Masters champion.

Patrick Reed, from just one behind, seems the likely victor. Reed, bursting with confidence since his Augusta heroics, signed off from Carnoustie with three rounds of par or better and his second visit to the European Open could be ending with the trophy. His putter is red-hot and can prove decisive on a day when birdies will be plentiful.

Final-round twoball punters are pointed towards Wattel and Paratore, who can overpower and outgun David Horsey and David Drysdale in their Sunday duels.

The final pairing of DeChambeau and McEvoy is scheduled to tee off at 11.45am UK and Ireland time.
