Top tips for the Senior Players Championship

David Toms took his time getting off the mark on the Champions Tour but he chose the fattest prize, the $720,000-to-the-winner Senior US Open, to do it and has soared to the top of the over-50s money list on the back of just one victory.

The 2001 USPGA champion needed 35 senior tournaments to break through but he is such a thoroughbred it surely won’t be a long wait for number two.

He was only three under par at Broadmoor, a gruelling test, but the Senior Players Championship at Exmoor on the outskirts of Chicago will require a lot more birdies before the winner of the fourth senior Major is crowned.

This is the first time Exmoor has hosted a pro tournament. A limited field of 81 and no cut mean you get a full 72-hole run for your money.

Bernhard Langer won this three times in a row until Scott McCarron pipped him in Maryland last year. There have been one or two hints that the German, a disappointing favourite at the US Open, is in minor decline, as he’s entitled to be at pushing 61.

Steve Stricker and Fred Couples are absentees, leaving Langer, Toms, Jerry Kelly, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul Broadhurst and Scott McCarron to fight it out. Tim Petrovic, Brandt Jobe and Paul Goydos, all top-five at the US Open, are dangerous floaters.

Jimenez was just one shy of Toms after being selected and he deserves another chance. The Mechanic has already won one Major this year. Kelly, who shared second with the Spaniard at Broadmoor, is a big threat but no value.

Jobe, whose best results come in Majors, looks good value each-way. Goydos won a tournament in each of his first four Champions year but is yet to do so this campaign. A top-six finisher on his two latest starts, he is better than a 40-1 pop.
