Andres Romero’s win at the 2017 BMW International Open came from nowhere and the Argentinian has done precious little since his day in the sun in Munich.

That was the case until last week, at least, when the 37-year-old finished in a tie for seventh at the John Deere Classic – another performance from out of the blue following a series of mediocre outings on the European Tour.

As a result bookmakers are showing Romero plenty of respect in the outright market for the Barbasol Championship but he’s failed to better 45th in seven European appearances this season and has missed the cut in two of the three PGA Tour events that he’s participated in.

If he plays as he did last week, Romero is an obvious threat, but he is hard to trust and is worth opposing in a match bet with JT Poston.

The American has been playing solid golf in his second season on the PGA Tour without really threatening a victory but he’s missed just five cuts from 18 starts and will view this visit to Keen Trace as a chance to challenge for a title while the big guns slug it out at Carnoustie.

Poston has posted top-40 finishes in five of his last seven starts and tends to make hay when the top dogs are away – he finished tied-10th in last year’s Puerto Rico Open, fourth in a weak field at the Shriners Hospitals Open in November and 19th in the Corales Puntacana Championship in March.

He rates a solid option against an unpredictable opponent.
Fabian Gomez rates a solid option in the 6.53pm threeball alongside Cody Gribble and Matt Every.

Gomez has carded opening rounds in the 60s in five of his last six starts and the two-time PGA Tour winner may not be far away from challenging for a title.

Gribble has been short of his best for some time while Every has not made a cut since April.
