Dean Burmester took over as Joburg Open favourite after round one, the power-packed South African carding a 66 on the Firethorn course and shortening from 25-1 to 13-2.

Burmester ended the day two shots behind the surprise pacesetter, Keenan Davidse, who was slashed from 400-1 to 40-1.

Dylan Frittelli, who became ante-post market leader when Louis Oosthuizen withdrew injured on Wednesday, made a slow start. Frittelli carded a 70 at Bushwillow, the slightly easier of the two tracks being employed this week, and drifted to 25-1.

In-running punters should consider the 14-1 about Erik van Rooyen, who fired a bogey-free 64 at Bushwillow and can approach the next three days at Firethorn with great confidence.

Second-round threeball punters are pointed towards another talented South African youngster. Christiaan Bezuidenhout can outscore veteran duo Anders Hansen and Mark Foster in the 9.15am (UK and Ireland time) match at Firethorn.

Recommendation
C Bezuidenhout
