Match preview

It has all been going to plan so the Great Britain Women's team won't want anything to slip when they play Canada in their final group game at the Olympics.

All areas of the pitch are looking strong. The defence has been solid, the midfielder are dominating games and they have one of the tournament's most in-form strikers in Manchester City's Ellen White.

And after red-hot favourites the USA lost one of their two games, new coach Hege Riise and her charges are dreaming of a gold medal.

Team GB are 4-1 second-favourites to take the crown but they would avoid a clash with the USWNT, who beat England in the World Cup semi-finals in 2019, if they can ensure they don't lose against Canada in their final Group E clash.

Their opponents provide an experienced test - star player Christine Sinclair has scored 187 for her country - but Riise's charges have hardly been threatened in their opening two games against Chile and Japan, both of which have been won without conceding.

And the manager will be delighted that the switch to replace Millie Bright and Rachel Daly from the first game with Demi Stokes and Leah Williamson was seamless.

Canada beat England in a friendly at Stoke in April, but this team is a stronger one with Arsenal midfielder Kim Little an excellent addition and her Scotland team-mate Caroline Weir had a great effect when she was introduced for the final half an hour against Japan when Team GB were desperate for a goal.

White obliged with 16 minutes remaining, and it is worth remembering that it was quite a sluggish performance when they struggled to create opportunities.

However, Canada know they need to win to finish at the top of the section - they will be just as keen to avoid the Americans and they could prove more positive than the hosts were on Saturday.

That would play into Riise's team's hands and they can exploit any gaps using the pace of Nikita Parris on the right in particular, so there seems a decent chance that the British girls can make it three wins out of three.

Key stat

Seven of Canada's last nine games have featured fewer than three goals.
