Preview
Expect goals in Yokohama, where free-scoring South Korea and Mexico should lay on some decent fare in the last of the men's quarter-finals.
After being undone by a physical New Zealand in their opener, London 2012 bronze medalists South Korea went goal-crazy, crushing a decent Romania sided 4-0 and then piling six past hapless Honduras. They also hit the woodwork twice in that rout.
Valencia's Lee Kang-in couldn’t buy a goal in La Liga last season but has come off the bench to register three already.
Bordeaux' Hwang Ui-jo was the hero against Honduras with a hat-trick though the central American nation were down to ten men by half time.
Kim Hak-bum's side are very decent going forward but they can be muscled around at the back – as New Zealand proved – and Mexico will be acutely aware of that.
The Mexicans finished runners-up in Group A with a 4-1 hammering of France – led by veteran frontman Andre-Pierre Gignac, who now plays his club football in Mexico – their most noteworthy result.
The opening game between Spain and Ivory Coast in Rifu is eye-catching because of the prices.
The Spanish side is undoubtedly packed with star quality – the team who signed off the group campaign with a 1-1 draw against Argentina featured Marco Asensio, Pau Torres, Eric Garcia and Euro 2020 starlet Pedri – but they made desperately hard work of qualifying.
And no-nonsense Ivory Coast have already shown they won't be taking any prisoners having secured a 0-0 draw with holders and title favourites Brazil and a 1-1 draw with Germany, a result which saw the Germans eliminated.
With Manchester United's Eric Bailly and Torino's Wilfried Sinigo part of a rock solid four-man defence, they can clearly make life difficult for any side, and that includes the spluttering Spanish. Back the Africans on the Asian handicap.
Brazil were worked hard by both Germany and Ivory Coast so shouldn't be regarded as certainties against Egypt, although their classy front three of Bundesliga pair Mateus Cunha and Paulinho plus five-goal Richarlison, are hard to suppress.
However, Brazil have already been held by Ivory Coast and as with Spain, they look short enough. The draw at 18-5 is a fair runner.
In the other last-eight tie hosts Japan, the only team to qualify with a maximum nine-point haul, are 2-7 to take care of New Zealand.
