The Olympic velodrome has been a gold-medal factory for Great Britain with their cyclists plundering 20 of the 30 golds available in the last three Games.

British cycling's golden couple, Jason and Laura Kenny, have been responsible for half of those victories and both will bid to get the Tokyo 2020 gold rush started over the next few days.

Laura is scheduled to be the first Kenny to take to the track at the Izu Velodrome, which is located some 120km away from the Japanese capital, as part of the women's team pursuit squad aiming to continue their stranglehold on the event.

Great Britain have won both runnings of the event since it was introduced in London nine years ago, with the USA taking silver and Canada bronze both times.

The battle for gold again looks to be between GB and the United States, who beat them to the world title in Berlin last year.

The US team, spearheaded by former world time-trial champion on the road Chloe Dygert, are a formidable foursome and have been the dominant force on the world scene since Rio, winning three of the last four world championship titles. Tokyo 2020 could be the time they put it all together in an Olympic velodrome.

GB's male pursuiters are going for a fourth straight Olympic gold in Japan but they are only fourth-favourites to take home the title.

Denmark have been steadily building as the best quartet around since taking bronze in Rio, breaking the world record twice en route to becoming world champions in 2020.

The Danes are 4-9 to add Olympic gold to their collection and given they were over two seconds faster than any other squad in the first round at the worlds and then beat next-fastest qualifiers New Zealand by over five seconds in the final, the top step of the podium looks their's for the taking.

The women's team sprint will be the first event to be decided on the track with Germany, Russia and Australia all likely candidates for gold.
