Confident Xander Schauffele heads to St Andrews on winning streak

Xander Schauffele will be chasing four consecutive victories when he tees up in the Open Championship this week - the Californian rapidly shortening in price for the St Andrews showpiece.

Schauffele won the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour at the end of June, then followed up with success in the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am last Tuesday. A hat-trick of triumphs was completed in the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club on Sunday.

Schauffele was 20-1 for the Scottish Open, but he is no bigger than 16-1 for the Open as he bids to continue his hot streak.

Schauffele is the sixth player in the last ten seasons to enter a Major coming off back-to-back PGA Tour wins. Rory McIlroy, who won three in a row culminating in the 2014 US PGA, is the only one of that previous five who went on to Major glory.

McIlroy is Open favourite at 10-1, with Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and others jostling for second spot in a competitive betting heat.

Trey Mullinax, who won the Barbasol Championship on Sunday, was the last player to book his place in the St Andrews line-up. Matti Schmid was a shade of odds-on for the Barbasol after securing a two-shot final-round lead, but the German imploded.
