Sunday hurling analysis
Limerick v Waterford
2pm Sunday
Munster rivals Limerick and Waterford were due to meet on Saturday night, but adverse weather conditions associated with Storm Dennis saw the match postponed and rearranged for Sunday afternoon.
The teams are putting their 100 per cent winning records on the line in a tasty round-three clash that sees a repeat of last year's National League final, with John Kiely's men expected to oblige fairly comfortably.
Limerick's 1-24 to 0-19 win isn't hugely relevant to this test considering Waterford's changes in personnel on either side of the white lines, but Limerick are really rolling this season.
This will be the Deise's biggest test in this competition. They outclassed Westmeath as expected last time and saw off a Cork outfit not best known for blistering league campaigns in their 2020 opener.
A trip to the Gaelic Grounds will be altogether different as they take on a Limerick side who are as short as 2-5 to top Division 1A.
The Shannonsiders defied a slow start to overhaul Tipperary in the second half of their round-one tie before dominating Galway - who are in a similar situation to Waterford in terms of development under a new manager - at home last time.
They are hurling at an advanced level for this stage of the year and, having covered the handicap comfortably against Galway last week, they look good value at 5-6 in the -3 handicap market.
Ace forward Aaron Gillane came on as a substitute with 15 minutes to go a fortnight ago but will start this time around - he looked hungry for goals when bagging 1-6 against Tipperary.
The sharp shooter from Patrickswell scored 1-9 against the south-eastern side in last year's league decider and put up 1-4 during their 20-point win in the 2019 Munster campaign, so don't be surprised if Gillane rattles the net again.
Galway v Tipperary
TG4, 2pm Sunday
New Galway boss Shane O'Neill will be eager to avoid back-to-back league defeats when his side play Tipperary at Pearse Stadium on Sunday.
Their prospects have been boosted by the news that star man Joe Canning will start after picking up a knock against Limerick.
The round-two defeat to the ultra-slick Shannonsiders was effectively Galway's first real test of 2020 after they beat a 14-man Westmeath side in their opener when they never really needed to move out of third gear.
Tipperary were beaten in their opening two games and this season looks to be all about notching back-to-back All-Ireland Championships, which has long proved tricky for the title holders.
League glory doesn't appear to be a pressing matter for Liam Sheedy's men and the market indicates that Galway are more likely to be key players in this tournament as they are priced at 15-2 while the Premier County are 11-1.
That makes it slightly surprising that the Tribesmen, fielding a strong starting 15, are the fractional outsiders on home soil to topple a Tipperary team experimenting with the Munster opener in mind.
Expect Galway to be sharper for their eight-point defeat by Limerick and to begin with greater intent now they have a point to prove.
They trailed at half-time against arguably the best side in the country last time out, but were in front at the break in each of their championship games last year.
Galway to lead at half-time and full-time looks a tempting price at 11-4.
Wexford v Kilkenny
2pm Sunday
Wexford can stretch their unbeaten run against Kilkenny to six games in all competitions at Wexford Park on Sunday despite a home defeat to Clare in round two.
Davy Fitzgerald's side have been frustratingly wasteful in their opening two games, shooting 20 wides against Laois and 13 against the Banner County, but their most recent test should leave them in more battle-hardened than Kilkenny, who beat a dreadful Dublin side in round one before outclassing Carlow last time.
This will prove a far more significant test for Brian Cody's men.
Wexford were down 0-12 to 0-4 at the break against Clare after fighting an extremely strong breeze. It was their first home defeat in the league or championship since an opening-round loss to subsequent champions Limerick in 2019 and they are generally tough to beat on home soil.
The Model County were the only unbeaten team in last year's Leinster championship and key men Lee Chin, Matthew O’Hanlon and Diarmuid O’Keeffe look set to feature off the bench this weekend.
In contrast, Kilkenny are still without recent All-Ireland Club Championship winners TJ Reid, Colin Fennelly, Joey Holden, Adrian Mullen and Padraig Walsh.
Wexford are a confident selection as long as they sharpen up their shooting.
Clare v Laois
2pm Sunday
Anything other than a home victory for Clare against a winless Laois outfit would be a surprise, but Eddie Brennan's men have been scoring pretty freely in their opening two games and could be underestimated in the points market.
Laois put up a first-half tally of 2-8 with the aid of a strong breeze against Wexford in round one before scoring 0-8 going in the opposite direction in the second period.
A score of 2-17 against Dublin two weeks ago proved a respectable haul in defeat.
Considering their average of 22.5 points in each of their opening two games, and the fact that Wexford hit 13 wides while scoring 0-15 against Clare in their second game, Laois to score more than 17.5 total points looks achievable.
