Sunday analysis

Kerry v Meath

Fitzgerald Stadium, 1pm Sunday

Kerry can count themselves lucky to have banked three points in Division 1 as they could easily have none and they look too short for the visit of pointless Meath to Fitzgerald Stadium.

The Kingdom are as short as 1-10 to register their second win from four outings in the top tier and, while they should get over the line, there are better 1-10 shots every day.

It took nine minutes of injury time for Kerry to draw level with Dublin in round one, they were flat in round two and needed a last-gasp goal to beat Galway by a point and they could not contain Tyrone in round three. That sort of form does not warrant them to be as short as they are.

Meath have lost all three of their Division 1 outings, but they were the better side against Mayo a fortnight ago when a late mistake by Robin Clarke gifted Kevin McLoughlin a winning goal. There were also positives in their first-half showing against Tyrone.

Meath don't have many stars, but they work hard and have four top-class defenders who would get on a lot of county sides. The best of the bunch is Donal Keogan who continues to impress at every opportunity.

Bryan Menton should hold his own in midfield and, if Cillian O'Sullivan and Bryan McMahon can get running at the suspect Kerry defence, Meath could be more competitive than their odds suggest.

A seven-point handicap looks big, while 9-2 about Meath leading at half-time is also worth taking. It might not be until the final quarter when Kerry's class shines through.

Galway v Tyrone

Tuam Stadium, 2pm Sunday

The Padraic Joyce era has begun in promising fashion in Galway, but Tyrone's style of play could be their undoing.

Tyrone were surprise minimum-margin winners over Kerry in round three, but it shouldn't have come as too much of a shock as Mickey Harte's side are unbeaten in rounds three to eight of the league since they returned to the top flight in 2018.

That hard-earned victory over Kerry could be the turning point in Tyrone's season, as they were also buoyed by the news that Cathal McShane is not moving to Australia and will instead put all his efforts into the Tyrone cause.

The new advanced mark is tailor-made for McShane, whose size and strength could cause the Galway full-back line problems.

The further the league goes on the better Tyrone are going to get and 6-4 for an away win looks great value.

Monaghan v Mayo

Clones, 2pm Sunday

Scores could be at a premium as Mayo travel to Clones to take on Monaghan and the best bet on the match coupon could be for no goals to be scored.

Mayo failed to find the net against Dublin and did not create any meaningful goal chances there, while they were gifted a late goal against Meath from the only opportunity they created.

Monaghan have looked more dangerous up front but they have netted only two goals in their three outings and, with conditions set to be wet and windy, it might not be the best day for creating goal-scoring chances.

Mayo's last two encounters have seen totals of 22 and 23 points and it could be a similar story for their trip to Monaghan. This could be a game where 13 or 14 points will be a winning total.
