If there were any doubts about Limerick's superiority over the chasing pack last season, a 16-point demolition job against Cork in the All-Ireland Final was a most resounding answer.

It's difficult to get away from John Kiely's side in terms of which team is most likely to lift Liam MacCarthy, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are bombproof in the upcoming Allianz Hurling League.

They were only fourth in Division 1A last season when winning two of their five games. This Limerick side are eager to mop as much silverware as possible, but making it four All-Ireland titles in five years will undoubtedly be their biggest priority.

The Treaty County tend to be brought along gradually to deliver a peak performance in the Championship decider, and these early exchanges are, in part, likely to be fact-finding missions.

One of the most significant storylines during the off-season was the massive decision of Waterford boss Liam Cahill to turn down the advances of Tipperary and remain in charge of the Deise. His side desperately need to repay their manager's faith in 2022.

In recent years Waterford have often looked the side who can give Limerick most to think about, but they have virtually no significant silverware to show for the brilliant hurling they've produced.

Their wait for a first All-Ireland victory since 1959 goes on, beaten in two of the last five finals, and since their last Munster title in 2010 they have been beaten in five deciders.

Waterford last claimed significant silverware in the league 2015 and a strong campaign this time could be just what is needed to show Cahill and coach Mikey Bevans that they have made the right decision.

A league title would also give Waterford something to show for their efforts over the years and they will be buoyed by the excellent run of club side Ballygunner, who are preparing for the All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Final.

Tipperary and Galway are next in the Division 1 market behind Limerick look to be in an experimental phase under new management.

Cork, who haven't won the league since 1998, don't appear to place any serious emphasis on this time of year and could well have some scar tissue lingering from last year's mauling in the All-Ireland Final.
