Weekend football analysis
Armagh v Donegal
7.30pm, Saturday
The new-look Donegal style of play has Stephen Rochford's fingerprints all over it and they look terrific value to find the net twice against Armagh.
It is hard to remember the last time Donegal conceded four goals in a game before last Saturday when Monaghan netted four in just 43 minutes. Somehow, Declan Bonner's charges managed to escape with a share of the spoils and a place in the knockout stages of Division 1 is in their own hands.
There were times last Saturday when Donegal pushed nine and ten players forward in pursuit of scores. Ryan McHugh might have worn number five but he might as well have had 15 on his back he spent so much time in the opposition half.
Michael Murphy went off with an early hamstring injury and he is likely to miss this outing, but this Donegal team is still jam-packed with scoring potential.
Niall O’Donnell, Ciaran Thompson, Michael Langan, Paddy McBrearty and Oisin Gallen have the keys capable of unlocking this Armagh defence and I expect them to get a couple of goals.
Armagh goalkeeper Blaine Hughes has never looked overly convincing and conceded two to Tyrone and one to Monaghan in the opening round.
There tends to be a lot of chopping and changing of positions in front of him, which can lead to confusion, and Donegal should be able to land the spoils quite comfortably.
Tyrone v Monaghan
7.30pm, Saturday
Life after Mickey Harte was never going to be a rapid transformation for Tyrone but there were encouraging signs in the win over Armagh last weekend which suggest they can be a force this year.
It seems strange to see both Mattie Donnelly and Peter Harte form part of their rearguard unit but that's the way it is and, in Darragh Canavan, they have one of the most exciting young footballers in the country. He was exceptional in the Armagh win.
Monaghan must be wondering how on earth they didn't come away with maximum points away to Donegal last weekend and they could show symptoms of a hangover here. This Tyrone team is only going to get better the more they play together and I expect them to cover the two-point handicap.
Mayo v Meath
1.45pm, Saturday
All that is at stake here is top spot in Division 2 North and it wouldn't surprise me to see James Horan use the game to blood new talent.
Andy McEntee seems to have found his best starting 15 and Cillian O'Sullivan's two-goal salvo in the win over Down suggests the Moynalvey attacker is back to his best. Jordan Morris was electric last Sunday too and this Meath attack has the potential to pose Mayo plenty of problems.
Odds of 7-2 about a Meath win look big, while the four-point handicap is on the high side as well.
Galway v Dublin
3.45pm, Sunday
Galway got their league campaign back on track with a decisive success over Roscommon last weekend and they should be backed to make a fast start against All-Ireland champions Dublin at Tuam.
Rob Finnerty and Shane Walsh kicked a dozen points between them against Roscommon and Galway were reasonably impressive. They should have been further than two points in front at the break too, as Colm Lavin made a smart stop to deny Walsh just before the change of ends.
Fresh from that confidence-restoring win, Galway should break smartly from the traps and it's worth remembering that Dublin only scored a single point in the opening ten minutes against Kerry.
The 3-1 about Galway leading at half-time looks the best bet on the coupon.
Roscommon v Kerry
3.45pm, Sunday
Although Kerry conceded 4-9 to Dublin last weekend, at least two of those goals were individual errors and they should be able to restrict Roscommon to 15 points or fewer.
They held Galway to 0-11 in round one, while Roscommon have scored 1-13 and 0-16 in their two outings so far and it is hard to see them having as much possession here as they had against the Tribesmen.
