Weekend previews

Kerry v Galway

Austin Stack Park, Saturday, 3pm

Kerry are unbeaten in round one of the league for the last four years. The beat Donegal in the opener in 2017 and 2018, Tyrone in 2019 and drew with Dublin in a cracking high-scoring encounter at Croke Park last year. They tend to hit the ground running and expect them to issue an early statement of intent on home soil against Galway.

Kerry would have spent the last few months in pain, nursing the shock of their exit to arch rivals Cork in the Munster championship, and it's not hard to envisage a backlash in round one.

Paul Geaney is apparently back at the peak of his powers and injury-free, while rumours suggest James O'Donoghue could be ready to make an impact once again. Then, of course, there is David Clifford - probably the most talented attacker in the game.
It is about time this Kerry team started to achieve something big and that process could start here.

Damien Comer is back for Galway, but the Tribesmen have an inexperienced backline with two debutants named in their starting line-up. Jack Glynn, one of three All-Ireland U20 winners from last year included in the team, has been named at corner-back by manager Padraic Joyce, while Corofin clubman Dylan McHugh will get his first taste of league action too at centre back.

Perhaps an away match against Kerry is not the best place in the world to be experimenting so expect the home side to take full advantage. It could be one-way traffic so the two-point handicap ought to be taken care of without much fuss.

Louth v Antrim

Dundalk, Saturday, 3pm

Mickey Harte is a big coup for a county like Louth, but the betting looks all wrong to me for the visit of Antrim to Dundalk.

Antrim are 15-8 with Boylesports, despite the fact they posed Cavan big problems for much of their Ulster championship clash last November and were a point in front at half-time

The outrcome to that encounter could have been so different had All-Star goalkeeper Raymond Galligan not made a tremendous save to deny Patrick Gallagher at a crucial stage in the game.

This is an improving Antrim outfit who are more than capable of making things difficult for Harte in his first competitive game in charge of Louth, who were beaten by Longford in their sole game in last year's Leinster championship.

Cork v Kildare

Semple Stadium, Saturday, 3.30pm

Given Jack O'Connor has named Daniel Flynn, Kevin Feely and Jimmy Hyland in his forward line for the clash with Cork, it's hard to understand why Kildare are as big as 2-1.

If this game was played 12 months ago, Kildare would have been close to favourites and I'm not sure the Rebels have made as much progress in the interim as the betting suggests.

Meath v Westmeath

Pairc Tailteann, Sunday, 3.45pm

Meath might not have celebrated any silverware in recent years but the Royals are actually quite a formidable force on their home patch in Navan and expect them to defy a four-point handicap.

Mickey Newman, arguably Meath's best forward in the last decade, is back on the panel and the home side now have a young predator in Jordan Morris who scored a whole host of goals in 2020.

This is an improving Meath side who has had Andy McEntee in charge for a few years so they know the system they want to play. They should open their campaign with a comfortable win.
