Verdict
The Netherlands have gained a reputation for spectacular failures in major tournament qualification campaigns – missing out on Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 – but they can avoid another disaster by defeating Norway in Rotterdam.
Group G is set for a fascinating conclusion with three teams - the Netherlands, Turkey and Norway – in contention for first place.
The Oranje need one more point to advance as group winners but a defeat could see them drop from first to third, as long as Turkey are victorious away to Montenegro.
Norway need a victory to be assured of a top-two finish and give them the best chance of finishing above the Turks, who are ahead of them on goal difference, but their chances are reduced by the absence of their best player, Erling Haaland, who has a hip injury.
The Norwegians sorely missed Haaland during Saturday's 0-0 draw at home to Latvia, and may struggle to cope with the Dutch - even though the home side are inconvenienced by having to play in an empty stadium.
New coronavirus restrictions in the Netherlands include the insistence on sports events taking place behind closed doors.
The timing of the partial Dutch lockdown isn't great for Louis Van Gaal's side, but they have excelled in home games, taking 12 points from 12 available and scoring 17 goals in the process.
A huge opportunity was wasted at the weekend when the Netherlands drew 2-2 away to Montenegro, throwing away a two-goal lead inside the last 15 minutes, but they will be determined to make amends and can quickly discourage the Norwegians by taking a first-half lead and running out comfortable winners.
Peru are making late progress in their efforts to achieve successive World Cup qualifications and can justify favouritism against South American basement boys Venezuela in Caracas.
The Incas were dominant 3-0 winners at home to Bolivia on Thursday and can chalk up another valuable three points as they close in on a place in the top five.
