Preview

Argentina and Uruguay were both left frustrated by goalless draws in Friday's World Cup qualifying fixtures, but only one side looks to have the quality to make up for that disappointment.

Argentina enjoyed 70 per cent possession in their stalemate with Paraguay but failed to make it count as they extended their unbeaten run to 23 matches.

That draw in Asuncion continued the Albiceleste’s steady, if unspectacular, progress towards qualification for Qatar 2022, leaving them second in the standings, eight points behind leaders Brazil.

A visit from Uruguay usually brings the best out of the reigning South American champions though - Argentina have won the pair’s last five World Cup qualifiers on home soil.

While Lionel Messi and company are firmly entrenched in the qualification places, Uruguay’s position is more precarious.

La Celeste drew a blank for the sixth time in their last 12 matches against Colombia last time out and are planning to reunite Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani against Argentina in an effort to rectify their goalscoring issues.

However, the duo couldn’t breach a well-drilled Argentinian side in the Copa America this summer as they lost 1-0 and a similar outcome appears likely.

Plucky Paraguay are four points adrift of the top four and could enhance their qualification prospects with a positive result in Chile.

Paraguay have won their last three meetings with Chile, who have only an outside chance of qualification after a 2-0 loss to Peru.

La Roja have won one of their last 10 matches and could come up short against a Paraguay side who have lost just one of their last four away qualifiers.
