Sons set to fall out of the second tier

Hibs are getting nervy, with improving Dundee United breathing down their necks, but the capital side should still have the quality to fend off United’s challenge.

Neil Lennon’s side started the season superbly, but they have suffered a number of blips, including a recent defeat at their nearest rivals.

In contrast, the Tannadice side, under the wise guidance of division specialist Ray McKinnon, have shrugged off their sluggish start. Lennon has the luxury of a large squad of players who should be too good for this league.

This is Hibs’ third year in Scottish football’s lower leagues and they dare not blow it again. Their strike force includes Jason Cummings, Grant Holt, Brian Graham and Martin Boyle and if he can get them to start converting the mountain of chances they create, Hibs should have enough.

Morton and Falkirk should both reach playoff places.

Dumbarton look like this may finally be a season too far for them and could finish bottom.

St Mirren have had an awful season, but excellent young manager Jack Ross has put faith in his youngsters and there are signs that it will pay off.

The Sons were knocked out of the William Hill Scottish Cup by Bonnyrigg Rose at home and the combination of a thin squad and continuing injuries to key players could do for Stevie Aitken’s men.
