Match preview

There have been numerous commentaries on the trials and tribulations of the Scottish national football team over the years that some people might think it is inevitable that they will lose in the Faroe Islands on Tuesday.

All the ingredients seem to be there for another chapter in their so-near-but-yet so-far history, but punters should put their faith in Steve Clarke's team when they head 200 miles northwest to the North Atlantic archipelago for their latest Group F clash.

The joy at Scott McTominay's last-gasp winner in a pulsating clash against Israel on Saturday will no doubt still be ringing in their ears.

Group leaders Denmark are over the hills and far away, but Clarke's team have grabbed the race to finish second by the scruff of the neck in the last couple of months.

They needed to win in Austria and beat Israel at home and that is exactly what they have done, so the players will not need reminding that they can ill-afford to take their eye off the task.

The Faroes are already out of the running and it could be a face-saving operation as they concentrate on keeping the score down.

They beat Liechtenstein 5-1 in a friendly and posted a 2-1 win over fellow group strugglers Moldova, but the latter are the only goals they have scored at home in the group.

Austria headed north with a depleted squad on Saturday and even then the Islanders were unable to muster much in attack and their visitors eased to a 2-0 success.

That lack of firepower makes Scotland winning to nil an attractive bet, and one that has landed on each of the last five occasions the teams have met.

They did previously share two draws but those results are ancient history and if Scotland focus on the here and now, they should have few problems.

Key stat

The Faroe Islands have failed to score in three of their four home World Cup 2022 qualifiers
