England World Cup betting news: Maguire odds-on to be dropped for Iran clash
Penalty error leaves defender battling for his starting spot
Reaction to England's 3-3 draw with Germany and the latest market moves for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
Under-fire England defender Harry Maguire is 8-11 with Ladbrokes not to start the Three Lions' opening match of the World Cup after a horror show in Monday's 3-3 draw against Germany.
Maguire, who became the fall guy for the defensive issues that plagued Manchester United in the opening weeks of the season, was caught in possession by Jamal Musiala before fouling the Bayern Munich man inside the box.
Ilkay Gundogan netted the resulting penalty on a night when England came from two goals down to lead 3-2, only to be pegged back by a late Kai Havertz equaliser following an error from goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Maguire's England future is under scrutiny and Ladbrokes go evens that manager Gareth Southgate starts the centre-back against Iran on November 21, keeping faith with a player who was an integral part of the Three Lions' run to the World Cup semi-finals four years ago.
Betfair have more faith in Maguire, offering 4-7 that he is handed a starting berth in England's first match in Group B, a section that also contains Wales and the USA.
Newcastle goalkeeper Pope was unable to take advantage of an injury to Everton's Jordan Pickford as he allowed a shot to squirm into Havertz's path and he is 9-1 with Betfair to unseat the Toffees custodian, another key player in the 2018 campaign in Russia.
Pickford is 4-11 to face Iran while Chelsea's Mason Mount, who was among the England goalscorers having entered the Wembley fray as a substitute, is 11-10 to start the World Cup opener.
Skipper Harry Kane scored his 51st international goal from the penalty spot and he is 8-1 with bet365 to score seven or more goals in Qatar as he defends his 2018 World Cup Golden Boot.
England are third-favourites to win the World Cup at a general 7-1, behind five-time winners Brazil, who are available at 9-2 and holders France, who are 6-1.
Ladbrokes make Southgate 2-5 not to be in charge of England's first game after the tournament, the final of which takes place on December 18.
