Denmark have improved hand over fist in recent years and they beat France home and away in the Nations League. They should have far too much for a Tunisia side who were blanked in three of their five Africa Cup of Nations matches earlier this year.

Match preview

It is hard to make a case for any national team having improved more in the last four years than Denmark and they have transformed into genuine contenders to top Group D in Qatar.

They open their campaign against Tunisia, who have won just one of their last 12 matches in their last four World Cup campaigns.

The Eagles of Carthage have never made it beyond the group stage and look unlikely candidates to do so this time around.

Manager Jadel Kadri took over in January and will need to hit the ground running at the top level if his team are to get anything out of a clash with this strong Denmark side.

The Danes reached the semi-final of last year’s European Championships without Christian Eriksen, and their creative midfielder has since returned to full fitness and been in good form for his club side Manchester United.

He helped his nation to a strong recent Nations League campaign in which they beat France home and away and were victorious in four of their six encounters.

Kasper Hjulmand’s men also breezed through qualification, winning nine of their ten games and conceding just three goals.

The Scandinavians went unbeaten in 90 minutes at the last World Cup, losing out on a penalty shootout to finalists Croatia in the round of 16.

Given their rock-solid recent defensive record and the likelihood that Tunisia will struggle going forward, Denmark are fancied for a comfortable victory.

Tunisia scored five times in five games at the Africa Cup of Nations and four of those came in a win over Mauritania. The north Africans were beaten by Burkina Faso in the quarter-final of that tournament and lack the cutting edge of others in this group.

Denmark have scored at least twice in six of their last eight matches, against a tougher level of opposition than this, and they are fancied to overcome a one-goal deficit on the handicap as they stake an early claim to top this section.
