World Cup football tips for Monday December 5: Japan fire up 4-1 double

Brazil may need to be patient in last-16 showdown with South Korea

World Cup favourites Brazil will hope to move a step closer to a sixth title on Monday when they face South Korea in the round of 16.

The winner of that tie will face either Japan or Croatia in the quarter-final and Racing Post Sport's Chris Rivers has selected a bet from both games for Monday's World Cup double.

All bets must be placed by 3pm on Monday.

Japan v Croatia

Both teams have scored in three of Japan's last four games and the Samurai Blue's ability to break quickly on the counter-attack makes them a viable threat to an ageing Croatia side.

Croatia may have drawn blanks in two of their three group stage games but showed when scoring four against Canada that when it clicks, they are a force to be reckoned with going forward.

Brazil v South Korea

Brazil have gone five World Cup games without a first-half goal and may need to be patient in their last-16 encounter against South Korea.

The Taegeuk Warriors are expected to take a cautious approach to this game having been hammered 5-1 by Brazil in a friendly last June and have shown enough to suggest they can continue the pattern of the Selecao's games at this World Cup being level at the break.
