Preview

Underwhelming would be the best way to describe the Netherlands' defence of their European Championship title and life might not get any easier when they face a steely Switzerland side.

The Dutch need only to avoid defeat at Bramall Lane to advance to the quarter-finals having taken four points from their first two games, most recently edging out Portugal 3-2 having drawn their opener against Sweden.

A win in Sheffield would secure top spot in Group C but while results have gone to form so far, not everything is rosy in the Netherlands’ garden with some grumblings from within the camp relating to coach Mark Parsons’ handling of the team.

Injury and illness have taken their toll too and the Oranje could be without star striker Vivianne Miedema for the second game running due to a bout of Covid, while they’ve lost captain and first-choice goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal to a shoulder issue.

Without Veenendaal between the sticks, the Netherlands have looked disorganised at the back and should be troubled by a Switzerland side who have scored in 21 of their last 23 European Championship matches, including qualifiers.

Nils Nielsen’s underdogs need to go for maximum points, knowing only a win will see them through to the quarters but lack the defensive quality to keep out the Dutch, making both teams to score a strong option.

Sweden managed to breach the Swiss backline twice in their last game as they picked up a 2-1 win but the Olympic silver medallists were far from satisfied with their showing.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side need only a point to qualify for the last eight, yet there’s a desire in the squad to give a reminder of their title credentials and they could squash plucky Portugal.

Portugal, a late replacement for Russia, have performed with credit but have conceded at least two goals in both their matches and their slightly chaotic style may not match up well with the well organised Swedes.
