Previews

Germany will be gunning for revenge against Denmark in their Group B opener at Brentford though it doesn’t look guaranteed.

The Germans are hot favourites to see off the Danes, but they were every bit as warm an order when they met at the last Euros five years ago.

And favourite backers got their fingers well and truly burned that day.

Denmark won that quarter-final showdown in Rotterdam 2-1 and went on to reach the final while the Germans headed back to Berlin with their tails between their legs, their 22-year reign as champions of Europe over.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s team have had this game on their minds for the past few months, and maybe that explains why they have lost their aura of invincibility. But the fact is, whether distracted or otherwise, they have won only two of six games in 2022 and aren’t the juggernaut they once were.

They are packed with talents, none more so than defensive rock Marina Hegering, and Bayern Munich’s sumptuous goal-getter Lea Schuller.

But the Danes have pace, especially out wide, and will be confident of exploiting holes left in behind.

The graceful Nadia Nadim is no more than a cameo threat now as she comes back from serious injury though Real Madrid youngster Sofie Svava and Chelsea danger woman Pernille Harder will be a threat to anyone.

There is massive pressure on the Germans knowing they need to get a result with Spain lurking in a competitive section, and they don’t come with guarantees.

The Danes can nick a point if they are well organised – and they looked tidy enough in recent friendlies against Austria, Brazil and Norway, winning two, losing to the Norwegians just 2-1.

Spain are looked upon as certs to beat Finland in the other Group B encounter.

They might no longer be blessed with the talents of Alexia Putellas – out with a tendon injury – but they still boast a classy roster and ought to dismantle a Finnish side who have won just one of their last nine matches.

That said, six of the eight they didn’t win featured three goals or fewer, so they can stubbornly keep the score down.

England have been cut to tournament favourites with some firms after opening their Euro 2022 campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria on Wednesday night.

Beth Mead’s 16th-minute strike was the only goal in a match the hosts should have won by more.

It saw them cut to 7-2 from 9-2, leapfrogging Spain on several books. Mead was cut to 9-1 from 14-1 to be tournament top scorer.
