Three things to watch out for in this weekend's football

1 Cardiff have more work to do

Cardiff bought themselves some time in their fight against Premier League relegation with a precious 2-0 win at Brighton, but with a two-point gap to bridge, one fewer game to play and Liverpool the visitors this Sunday you can see why they are 1-3 to go down.

That sense of apprehension is heightened thanks to memories of the 4-1 mauling Cardiff suffered when they went to Anfield in October.

When Liverpool last visited Cardiff, five years ago, they headed back up north with a Luis Suarez-inspired 6-3 win.

Cardiff’s record against the big six this season hardly encourages a bet on the 16-1 Bluebirds either. They have played ten, lost ten, scored seven and conceded 31.

2 PSG are limping towards the title

As French champions in five of the past six seasons you would have thought Paris Saint-Germain would be masters in the art of crossing the line, but they are struggling to do so this year.

Three times in the last fortnight they could have secured Ligue 1 glory but each time they have blown it, drawing 2-2 at home to Strasbourg and suffering back-to-back losses to their nearest challengers Lille and Nantes.

Opportunity number four knocks this weekend when they welcome Monaco to the French capital and it’s a fixture that suits them.

Thomas Tuchel’s men, 8-15 shots, have won eight straight shootouts against Monaco with an aggregate score of 31-4.

If Lille drop points at Toulouse earlier in the day, PSG will be crowned champions before they take to the pitch.

3 Ajax chasing an unlikely treble

If it was fanciful that Manchester City would pull off the quad, then it would have been utterly preposterous a couple of months ago to think that Ajax would still be in the hunt for a treble of their own.

By the second week of February, the Amsterdam giants were six points off the pace in the Eredivisie and 2-1 to win it, and a massive 200-1 for the Champions League after losing 2-1 at home to Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Fast forward two months and Ajax have caught and passed PSV in the Dutch league – they lead on goal difference with four fixtures to go – and find themselves in the last four of the Champions League. They also have a Dutch Cup final against Willem II to look forward.

Ajax are 4-6 favourites to win the league and visit Groningen this weekend.
