It is often said the Premier League is the most competitive in the world and it's certainly true in that the season starts with more genuine title challengers than Europe's other elite leagues.

However, while Chelsea's seven-point winning margin last term was closer than Germany (15 points) it was wider than Italy (four) and Spain (three).

Now take a look at the gulf between the champions and the team in eighth. The Premier League points difference was 47 compared to Serie A (31), Bundesliga and La Liga (37).
