Transfer tracker: Romelu Lukaku expected to star on Premier League return
James Milton examines this week's big transfers at home and abroad
Romelu Lukaku
Inter to Chelsea, £97.5m (subject to medical)
A decade on from first signing for Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku returns to Stamford Bridge with unfinished business in the Premier League.
He made only ten league appearances for the Blues in his first spell, starring on loan at West Brom before a permanent move to Everton, and was perhaps unfairly labelled a flop at Manchester United.
Lukaku's outstanding performances for Serie A champions Inter last season clearly impressed Chelsea and this quality addition will push the Blues close to the Premier League title.
Lionel Messi
Barcelona to Paris St-Germain, free
Not content with signing Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Georginio Wijnaldum on free transfers this summer, PSG have landed the biggest coup of them all by bringing Lionel Messi to Paris.
Unsurprisingly, they were slashed for Champions League glory as fans drooled over a front three of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Messi, who remains as devastating as ever at the age of 34.
The Barcelona legend was La Liga's top goalscorer for the fifth season in a row in 2020-21 and was named player of the tournament as Argentina won the Copa America this summer.
Adam Armstrong
Blackburn to Southampton, £15m
Danny Ings's departure to Aston Villa left Southampton in desperate need of a new striker and they have won the battle to sign Blackburn's Adam Armstrong.
Only Brentford's Ivan Toney beat Armstrong's tally of 28 Championship goals last season and the Rovers striker scored 23 times from open play to Toney's 21. Saints will hope that the 24-year-old can thrive alongside Che Adams, another EFL graduate.
Cristian Romero
Atalanta to Tottenham, £42.5m
Tottenham's summer has been dominated by the Harry Kane saga but they have also managed to snap up the man voted the best defender in Serie A last season.
Atalanta's Cristian Romero went on to win the Copa America with Argentina this summer and he looks an important signing for Spurs given that they were short of convincing centre-back options.
Josh Sargent
Werder Bremen to Norwich, £8m
The 21-year-old USA international scored five Bundesliga goals in 32 appearances last season and will provide competition for Norwich top scorer Teemu Pukki.
Sargent is primarily a centre-forward but can play on the flanks and the Canaries have an excellent recent record of developing young players.
Christos Tzolis
PAOK to Norwich, £8.8m
Another youngster arriving at Carrow Road is exciting Greek winger Christos Tzolis, who signed a five-year deal on Thursday.
At the age of 19, Tzolis has already won eight senior caps for Greece and he scored 16 goals in 46 league and cup appearances for PAOK during an impressive 2020-21 campaign.
Yoane Wissa
Lorient to Brentford, £8.5m
Like Norwich, Brentford's recent success owes much to their shrewd scouting and recruitment system and the Bees hope to have unearthed another gem in DR Congo winger Yoane Wissa.
His goals fired Lorient to the Ligue 2 title in 2019-20 and he relished the step up to Ligue 1 last season, scoring ten times in 30 starts. Despite undergoing eye surgery after a shocking acid attack last month, he could be in the squad to face Arsenal on Friday.
Joe Morrell
Luton to Portsmouth, undisclosed
Midfielder Joe Morrell started all four of Wales's matches at Euro 2020 so Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley was delighted to bring in a player he had signed on loan at previous club Lincoln.
Big-spending Ipswich were also interested in the Luton man and, after facing the likes of Jorginho and Marco Verratti at the Euros, Morrell will be expected to star in League One.
